UK General Election 2017

On the 18th April 2017 the British Prime Minister, Theresa May announced her intention to seek a general election on 8th June 2017. On 19th April 2017,  The House of Commons passed a motion to allow a general election to be held before the end of the term prescribed by the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011. The Queen will formally dissolve Parliament on 03rd May 2017.

I do not expect the election coverage in the mainstream media to be anything like fair, balanced or objective so, below I have listed some links to material that I find interesting, provocative, amusing or in some way worth reading or watching.

Just so my cards are on the table, I don't have a vote in the UK, but if I did, I would cast it for the Labour Party led by Jeremy Corbyn.

As usual, I don't claim that the material at any of the links below is "true" or "accurate". I make no claims for it except that it is worth a look.

They say Labour is financially inept. Yet just look at Tory welfare spending by Frances Ryan

This opinion piece appeared in The Guardian newspaper on 27.04.2017. It gives the lie to the myth that the Conservatives are the party of fiscal competence and that Labour are a bunch of useless profligates

Jeremy Bernard Corbyn 'What Was Done'

This "what if" YouTube video gives an amusing and slightly irreverent take on the story of Jeremy Corbyn's rise to power. The story teller lives in a future where quality social housing is plentiful and affordable as is public transport and the UK National Health Service is the best equipped and most effective in the world.

Craig Murray used to be the British Ambassador to Uzbekistan. He was removed from the post and sacked by the FCO after he felt unable to remain silent about lack of democracy and torture being used in Uzbekistan.

His blog contains some incisive articles on themes related to the general election. Currently at the top of the page (all the articles are on one page and you have to scroll down to the older ones)is "The Gospel According to May", but scroll down and you'll find plenty more.
